Institution created in 1986 in Lleida in Spanish Catalonia, co-directed by the educational psychologist, Julieta Agustí, and visual artist and playwright, Joan Andreu Vallvé, who also served as the headmaster of the Institut del Teatre (Theatre Institute) of Barcelona between 1971 and 1989.
The centre promotes the creation and diffusion of puppetry and drama by producing its own shows and organizing the annual Feria Internactional de Teatro de Títeres de Lleida (Lleida International Puppet Theatre Fair). This festival, held since 1989, serves as both an exhibition and a market for shows. The centre also organizes the annual Feria del Libro de las Artes Escénicas (Performing Arts Book Fair), produces exhibitions, and publishes and promotes workshops and events related to the theatre arts. As a social activity centre, it supports the Asociación de Espectadores del Centro (Spectators Association Centre), with which it collaborates on multiple cultural and artistic activities.
Under the artistic direction of Joan Andreu Vallvé, the centre has produced a large number of shows including El Retablo de Maese Pedro (Master Peter’s Puppet Show, 2002). Its collaborations with other institutions include En Jan Titella (1998), Mowgli (1998), El Retablo de Navidad (The Nativity Puppet Show, 1999), and the opera, Hansel y Gretel (2003). Its shows have been presented in various countries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
